C6 meeting / Treffen Noorwegen / Norwegen, 2021

Preliminary plan International C6 meeting Norway June 9-13 2021

-Pretour Wednesday June 9th 2021: Transport leg from Oslo to Voss, across the Hardangervidda mountain crossing, including crossing the Hardangerfjord. This would be fitting those equipes arriving from the east or south, like Sweden, or arriving Oslo with the ferry from Kiel. As this is a bit longer leg, of 360km altogether, there won`t be time for a lot of sightseeing on our way, apart from 2-3 photostops. The departure from Oslo will be scheduled to fit for equipes arriving with the Kiel ferry in the morning.
Destination that day, I hope to be at Fleischer`s hotel in Voss, a spectacular historic hotel similar to Dalen Hotel from our 2013 meeting. As Voss is located only 1:30 drive from Bergen, another good option for equipes from Europe, would be the Fjordline connection from Hirtshals via Stavanger to Bergen. That ferry arrives in Bergen at 1230, so there would be plenty of time to get to Voss in time for dinner.

-Day 1, Voss-Jølster 202km. This includes driving the steepest public road in Norway, 18% decend. Then a stop at the viewing point Stegastein, 600 metres above the Nærøy fjord. (close to Flåm). This scenery is on the world heritage list. Processing through the worlds longest tunnel, Lærdalstunnellen, with presumably lunch in the pittoresque village of Lærdal. Then crossing the Sognefjord with a short ferry ride and proceed on to Jølster. On our way here, I have been considering a stop at the glacier museum.

-Day 2, Jølster to Geiranger 161km. From Skei in Jølster, we head north, crossing the mountain of Utvikfjellet, and descend to the Innvikfjord. Following along the fjord, we will arrive the village of Loen. The plan is to make a longer stop here, to take a new gondola up to a nice restaurant on top of the mountain, 1000 metres above the village. After lunch the drive will continue, with a short detour to climb up to the mountain Dalsnibba. It`s possible to drive all the way to the summit, where you have a wonderful view over Gerianger. From there, it`s a rather short drive of approximately 30-45 minutes to arrive in Geiranger.

-Day 3, Geiranger to Kristiansund 207km. From Geiranger, there is a spectacular climb up the hairpin road passing the famous Eagles point. Following further north, another short ferry crossing of Storfjorden/Tafjord, before we follow the famous Trollstigen/Troll ladder route. Hopefully we can arrange lunch on top of Trollstigen, before descending the famous road that was opened in 1936. We will be passing the small town of Åndalsnes before proceeding to Kristiansund and get in pole position for the Atlantic road the last day. Kristiansund is a very appealing town situated on several small islands, with plenty of hotels just at the seaside.

-Day 4, Kristiansund to Molde via the Atlantic road. 130km. As a start this day, I will look into a possible visit at the Bacalao museum in Kristiansund, before heading towards the Atlantic road. Enroute, we might as well make a stop at a stave church or some other interesting sight. The Atlantic road is only 36 km long itself, though very spectacular. Lunch might be in a famous restaurant in the tiny village of Bud, on the outermost coastline towards the open sea. This is where the cruise ship Viking Sky got into trouble last winter. One of the toughest coastline areas in the entire Norway. Final destination will be Molde, a town beautifully located along the sea, with a panoramic view to the Alps of Sunnmøre. This is the final destination of our tour, and the next day, the equipes could either head south towards Bergen again, or southeast through Romsdalen towards Oslo.

By experience, it`s important to avoid making the legs too long, because with a group of many cars, everything takes a lot more time than expected. The preliminary time schedule I`ve been putting up, gives us plenty of room to adjust the timing during the day, to avoid us being in a hurry or running late. There are disadvantages about having to change hotels every day, though to be able to experience all these places, we don`t have much of a choice. Should we choose to stay at one hotel the entire event, we wouldn`t be able to visit more than just a few of these places, and have to drive the same roads several times. By my opinion, this tour will include the best and most spectacular places in the fjord district of Norway. I`m still working on adjustments and details about the event, so this is to be seen as a preliminary plan that might have to be changed due to practical issues of hotel capacity, prices and available sights.
